Source Brand
RS Catalogue Silver Mica Cap IC Voltage Stabilizer

Construction
1000pF or larger Silver Mica capacitor. Temperature controlled soldering iron. Volt meter.

Setup
Open the casing of your CD player or any device that has IC circuit. Both analogue and digital devices are applicable. Identify the IC power supply pins + and -. They are normally located at the corner of the chip. Some have writing on the circuit board to identify the pin. If unsure, power up the device and use the volt meter to trace the + and - pin. Once identified, power down the device. Solder on the capacitors onto the + and - pin. Make sure you minimize the caps legs length as they will reduce the efficiency of the tweak. Make sure you did not short any other pins accidentally. Carry on with all IC in the device.

Use
Cover back your device and connect everything as normal. Fire up and enjoy.

Performance
Dramatic improvement to the leading edges of music dynamics. You will find kick drum stronger. Guitar pluging nimbler. And general air of music reproduction wider. Other indirect results are improve musical tempo and timing.

Other
The improvement is due to stabilizing of IC supply voltage during musical impulse. When there is a suddent surge in output requirement, the voltage pin will experience a short dip in supply voltage. Putting in a parallel capacitor will help to maintain the voltage stability during these instances. However, to have significant hi-fi results, you must use silver mica capacitors. This is due to the extreme fast response of silver mica cap; low stray capacitance, low self inductance. Should you feel more advanturous, you may put more than 1 cap per pair of supply pin. This will increase the effective capacitance further and make large music dynamics response even better.

Chris M. Can you burn up the chip with the heat from the soldering?
